The Sisters of Mercy went to Peru from Burlingame
in 1964. Since then, fifteen Burlingame Sisters
of Mercy have worked with the Aymara people in the
Altiplano, especially with the women, in the areas
of religious education, general education, healthcare
and human rights. A number of Peruvian women have
become Sisters of Mercy and are carrying on the
Mercy mission there. They minister in education,
healthcare and in parish work.
As these women join the community, Sisters in Peru are uniting to form one body and choosing their own leaders. It is an exciting and challenging time for Mercy in Peru.
The seeds of this vigorous growth were planted 40 years ago by all who went to Peru and by those in Burlingame who supported Peru through prayer, energy and interest.
