Sisters of Mercy came to California and Arizona
in 1854 to nurse, to teach and to care for those
at the margins of society. Their work continues
with the help of dedicated co-workers, board members
and volunteers. Many sisters and associates are
involved in ministries outside the sponsored Mercy
institutions.
Some of the individual ministries include:
- Elementary school teaching at many schools throughout California. As classrom teachers, principals and tutors, sisters have remained true to one of their first missions here-excellent instruction.
- Spiritual ministries such as grief counseling and spiritual direction.
- The Refugee Resettlement program for the Diocese of San Jose, California.
- A Romanian association to help maintain the family unit and to improve housing and employment opportunities in Sibiu.
- Parish nursing in San Jose
- Meals on Wheels
- Clinical psychology
- Prison ministry at San Quentin and for women coming out of prison in San Mateo County.
