Catherine's Legacy
Catherine McAuley In 1803, following the deaths of her parents, 25 year-old Catherine McAuley went to live in Dublin with her distant relatives, William and Catherine Callaghan. While she was a steadfast Catholic, the Callaghans were not, but all three shared a common compassion for the poor.

During the 20 years she lived with the Callaghans, Catherine was both a loving and beloved daughter. Her deep faith, compassion and concern for the poor impressed the Callaghans. Their admiration for Catherine inspired the Callaghans to learn more about the Catholic faith. As a result, both asked to be received into the Catholic Church.

So great was Mr. Callaghan's trust and respect for Catherine that he made her the sole heiress of his property. That bequest enabled Catherine to purchase land on Dublin's fashionable Baggot Street and build the House of Mercy, now Mercy International Centre, where she could offer the poor the practical help they needed. These events led Catherine to found the Sisters of Mercy in 1831.

Thus, it was a bequest that initiated Catherine's Legacy - the Mercy legacy that soon was brought to California in 1854.

So, too, today, it is through the generous support of our friends and benefactors that the ministries of the Sisters of Mercy, Burlingame continue.
